Dark Files 4.0.1.2

Dark Files Editor's Review

This application can help you protect any file or folder from your hard disk. You can choose who gets access to what files on your computer. There are three levels of protection available ("Hidden", "Read Only", and "Full control").

The program settings can be protected by using a password. There is no default password, so you can set a new one whenever you want to. When I first started the program, I didn't know about this feature. I guessed that the "Administrator's password" menu entry only allows me to change my Windows password. It proved to be just a problem of misunderstanding.

Dark Files should allow you to define user groups and new users. No matter what I did, I wasn't able to use this feature. I decided to look into the help file of this application, but it was a waste of time. The help file looks like it's from another application. The pictures embedded in the help file are from another program. That program is also called DarkFiles, but it has a different user interface. Several features are explained correctly, but there are a lot of flaws in the documentation.

Pluses: The program uses a reliable technique to hide folders or files from your computer. It can also make files read-only, and it supports filtering only certain files from a folder.

Drawbacks / flaws: The help file is not very helpful. Also, this program doesn't support protecting network drives.

In conclusion: This program is suited for average users who need to protect files or folders from their hard drive. It can protect files from removable drives, but the protection is only available on the computer running Dark Files.
